The Experience

The drive from Ocho Rios felt longer than I expected — maybe it was just my nerves. Our driver, Andre, kept pointing out things along the way: the Green Grotto Caves (which I’d only seen on postcards), then the bauxite plant with its red dust clinging to everything. He slowed down near Columbus Park so we could snap a blurry photo out the window. I remember thinking how the sun was already dipping behind those thick Jamaican hills, making everything look kind of gold and sleepy.

By the time we reached Falmouth, there was this sticky warmth in the air and a line of boats bobbing at Glistening Waters Marina. Andre handed us over to Captain Roy — who had this laugh that made you want to laugh too, even if you didn’t catch every word. The lagoon itself looked pretty normal at first. But then he cut the engine and asked us to dip our hands in. It’s hard to describe — like someone switched on blue fairy lights under the water whenever you moved. I tried to film it but mostly ended up with shaky darkness and my own voice going “woah!”

I wasn’t sure about swimming at first (the idea of glowing in the dark is weirder than it sounds), but a couple from Kingston jumped right in so I followed. The water was warm and soft somehow — not salty like I expected — and when I kicked my legs, these trails of light shot out around me. Someone said it looked like we were all superheroes for a minute. When we got back on board, Roy told us about the tiny organisms making all this happen — dinoflagellates? Never thought I’d remember that word.

We could’ve stayed for dinner at the restaurant there but honestly, I just wanted to sit by the dock for a bit with my towel wrapped tight and watch other boats go out into that weirdly glowing dark. There was music coming from somewhere behind me and someone selling jerk chicken nearby — smoky-sweet smell drifting over. The ride home felt quieter somehow; everyone tired but grinning. Still think about that feeling of being lit up from below.
