The experience

The day starts with a scenic drive along Jamaica's north coast to the Blue Hole in the hills near Ocho Rios. You jump off the edge into the deep mineral pool, swing on Tarzan ropes, or swim under the caves carved into the lush rainforest. A short hike through the woods leads to Secret Falls, where the cascading water frames photo opportunities. The Blue Hole sits where the White River flows down from the hills, and that's where your rafting begins: a relaxing float downstream that ends on the beach with the option to swim in the ocean.

Dunn's River Falls is the climb: experienced guides lead you up 600 feet of tiered pools and cascades in a human chain, with stops along the way to swim and take photos. There's a natural "massage parlour" where water cascades over your shoulders as you pause mid-climb. If climbing isn't for you, the terrace offers a vantage point to watch others make the ascent. The tour passes historic plantation homes (Rose Hall Great House and Greenwood Great House), and stops briefly at Columbus Park Museum in Discovery Bay so you can photograph the relics and learn about Christopher Columbus's 1494 landing.

Private transportation means your group travels alone in an air-conditioned vehicle, setting your own pace and stopping for local fruits, photos or roadside food without waiting for other travelers. The guide speaks English and knows the history of each site. Lunch is on your own expense, usually traditional Jamaican jerk at a local stop. White River rafting admission is $30 per person.
