Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Taormina's historic landmarks
- Visit Ancient Theater of Taormina
- See the Naumachia fountain
- Tour Duchi di Santo Stefano Palace
- Explore Church of San Giuseppe
- Visit Cathedral of Taormina
The experience
The tour opens at the Ancient Theater, a Greco-Roman structure dug into the rock with views across the Ionian Sea toward Mount Etna. From there the guide leads you through the historic center to the Naumachia, a monumental fountain built of red bricks over 100 meters long and five meters high, then to the small Roman Odeon and Palazzo Corvaia, a Gothic palace that stands as Taormina's most recognizable building. You'll pass the Catania Gate and see Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefano, also Gothic, before reaching the Church of San Giuseppe with its Baroque façade and decorated interiors.
The walk ends at Taormina Cathedral, built around 1400 on the ruins of an earlier church and dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari. The cathedral's Gothic elements and simple interior reflect its medieval construction. Because this is a private tour, the guide adjusts the pace and can answer questions specific to what interests you most: the architecture, the history, the views, or the layout of the town itself.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Italian.
What is the Ancient Theater of Taormina actually like when you get there?
The Ancient Theater is a Greco-Roman structure carved directly into the rock, famous for its exceptional acoustics. The main draw is the panoramic view: from inside the theater you look out over the Ionian Sea with Mount Etna visible in the background, which is why it appears in photographs of Taormina so often.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
The tour is two hours long and stays entirely on foot through Taormina's historic center. It covers eight landmarks without transport between stops, so the walking is continuous but at a pace the guide sets and can adjust.
Can I choose between English and Italian for the guide?
Yes, the tour is available with a licensed guide in English or Italian. You select the language when you book.
Does this tour include entry to the Ancient Theater?
The tour visits the Ancient Theater and you see it from inside, but the ticket for entry to the Greek Theatre itself is not included and must be purchased separately if you want to stay longer or return on your own.
What makes Palazzo Corvaia special compared to the other palaces on the route?
Palazzo Corvaia is the most famous palace in Taormina and stands out for its pure Gothic style with pointed-arch windows and refined architectural details. It's a landmark most visitors photograph and is the one palace the town is known for internationally.
