I didn’t expect to smell lemons before even seeing the sea, but as soon as we left Messina port in that cool, quiet car, there it was — citrus and salt in the air. Our driver (I think his name was Salvo?) chatted about football and pointed out where the hills start to turn green. It’s not a long drive to Taormina, maybe an hour? But I was already feeling like I’d landed somewhere far away from the ship crowds.

Walking Corso Umberto felt like stepping into a painting — laundry flapping over balconies, old men arguing gently outside little cafés. There’s this spot at Piazza IX Aprile where you just stop because Mount Etna is right there, all haze and smoke in the distance. I tried to take a photo but honestly it didn’t do it justice. The Greek Theatre is what everyone talks about for a reason; sitting on those ancient stones with the bay below and the volcano behind…well, I got goosebumps. Some local kids were rehearsing lines on stage — their voices echoing up through stone arches. Didn’t expect that.

I wandered through Villa Comunale gardens after that — wildflowers everywhere and these odd little towers built by an Englishwoman (the guidebook said so). There’s shade if you need it, birds chirping like they own the place. If you want to go down to Isola Bella, there’s a cable car (costs a few euros), which feels a bit touristy but honestly, worth it for that view over the water. My shoes filled with sand at the beach and I didn’t even care.

Salvo picked me up right where we agreed — he waved like he’d known me for years. On the way back to Messina port, I kept thinking about that moment in the theatre with Etna in the background. Still not sure if it was real or if Sicily just does something strange to your memory.
