The Experience

The boat leaves Sorrento in the morning and heads south along the coast, passing the fishing village of Marina Grande and the 1st-century Roman ruins near the Baths of Queen Giovanna before reaching the open water of the Amalfi Coast. The skipper navigates past Nerano, Praiano and the Fjord of Furore—a narrow inlet carved into the cliffs—and points out the Li Galli archipelago, three small islands where legend places the Sirens who sang to Ulysses. The route is built around what you see from the water: the towns cling to the cliffs, the light hits the rock differently than it does from land, and the scale of the coast becomes clear only when you're floating in front of it.

You dock in Amalfi for about an hour and a half to walk the narrow streets, visit the cathedral and browse the artisan shops. Then the boat heads to Positano, where you have two hours to explore the stacked pastel houses, the beach and the town's restaurants. The operator recommends eating lunch here—either at a beach restaurant or grabbing a sandwich to eat while you wander. Before returning to Sorrento, the boat stops for a swim in the Gulf; masks are onboard if you want to look below the surface.

The boat carries no more than twelve people, which means it moves without the weight of a full-size tour group and can navigate the smaller inlets along the coast. Onboard there's a restroom, an outdoor shower and a bar stocked with prosecco, beer, soft drinks and seasonal fruit—all included.
