The Experience

The day starts at the Salt Museum, housed in an 18th-century windmill that once powered the salt pans. An expert guide walks you through the collection of tools, vintage photographs, documents and maps that trace salt production in Trapani from Phoenician times to now—showing how salt was not just a trade good but a strategic resource across the Mediterranean. You'll see the scale models and learn the salt cycle: how seawater enters the tanks, evaporates under sun and wind, and becomes harvestable crystals. The guide explains the ecological role these pans play and why they matter to the birds and the territory.

Then you move into the tanks themselves. You'll change into boots and a straw hat, take a wooden rake in hand, and step into a delimited, safe area of the operational salt pans. The work is simple and physical: you break the salt crust, rake it into small heaps called werewharves, and move it according to the method that has defined this landscape for generations. The guide stays with you, explaining how light, heat, wind and water drive the whole process—and what the effort behind each grain actually costs. You're not watching; you're doing the job.

Between the tanks, you walk the banks where the water shifts color—white salt, blue sky, pink-tinted brine reflecting the light. The guide points out flamingos and migratory birds that nest in the reserve.
