The experience
Taormina's dive operation runs Discover Scuba from the beach or from a dive boat, depending on conditions and your preference. A PADI professional walks you through the gear: how to breathe from the regulator, how to move and stay balanced underwater, and the safety checks you'll do before every dive. The instruction happens in shallow water first, so you get comfortable with the equipment and the sensation of breathing below the surface before you venture deeper or farther out.
Once you've practiced the core skills, you move into open water to explore. You'll swim around the seafloor, get a real sense of what diving feels like, and see what draws people to spend time underwater. The whole session takes about three hours. Bottled water and snacks are included. All scuba equipment is provided, so you bring nothing but yourself and a willingness to try something new.
The dive center offers the experience in English, Italian, German, Norwegian and several other languages, and children as young as 8 can join. You do need to be in reasonable physical health, and the operation notes it's not suitable for pregnant travelers. Public transportation runs nearby if you're traveling without a car.
Is this one for you? This is a shared, guided experience where a PADI professional leads you through every step, so it suits anyone curious about diving but not ready to commit to a certification course. If you want to try scuba without the time or cost of a full course, or if you're bringing children who are old enough to be curious but too young for certification, this is the entry point.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, German, Italian, Norwegian, Japanese and Dutch.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (8 to 12 years). Children under 8 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the difference between Discover Scuba Diving and getting certified?
Discover Scuba Diving is a one-time introduction with no certification at the end. You learn the basics and explore underwater for a few hours. The PADI Open Water Diver course, which the dive center also offers, takes longer and results in a card that lets you dive independently anywhere in the world. Discover Scuba is the quick way to try it first.
Do I need any diving experience to sign up?
No prior experience is necessary. The program is designed for complete beginners. The only requirements are that you're at least 8 years old and in reasonable physical health.
Will I actually go underwater, or is this just a lesson in the pool?
You go into open water (either from the beach or from a dive boat) after practicing the basics in shallow water. You'll explore the seafloor and swim around, not just drill skills in a confined space.
What happens if I panic or feel uncomfortable underwater?
Your PADI professional stays with you the entire time and watches for any signs of distress. If you feel uncomfortable, you can signal and return to the surface. The guide is trained to manage the experience at your pace.
