You’ll ride as a passenger on a classic Vespa through Rome’s lively streets with an expert local driver-guide. experience

What’s the experience like?

I hopped onto the back of a cherry-red Vespa, helmet snug and heart thumping a little—Roman traffic is no joke. Our guide, Marco, grinned and gave me a quick rundown before we zipped off. The city felt alive: scooters weaving past, the smell of espresso drifting from tiny bars, sunlight bouncing off cobblestones. We breezed through narrow lanes you’d never find on your own, catching bits of conversation from locals chatting outside bakeries.

First stop: the Spanish Steps. Even early in the day, there were folks perched on the steps, snapping photos or just people-watching. Marco pointed out the old tea room nearby—apparently it’s been there since the 1800s. From there, we wound up to Pincio Terrace in Villa Borghese. The view over Piazza del Popolo and those endless rooftops? Honestly, it’s one of those moments where you just have to put your phone down and take it all in.

We cruised past Piazza del Popolo itself—musicians playing under shady trees—and then made our way to the Trevi Fountain. You hear it before you see it: water rushing, coins clinking as visitors make wishes. Marco shared a story about how locals used to come here at night for fresh water back in his grandmother’s day.

If you want (and have time), there’s an optional stop at St Peter’s Basilica. We didn’t go inside this time but even just seeing that dome up close is something else. The ride continued up to Gianicolo Hill for another sweeping view—this one’s less crowded and you can spot all sorts of landmarks poking above the skyline.

We paused at “Er Fontanone”—locals’ nickname for the big fountain on Janiculum Hill—and then rolled into Trastevere. The streets here are tight, laundry flapping overhead, kids kicking a ball around corners. It smells like pizza dough and basil if you catch it at lunchtime.

The route took us along Via dei Fori Imperiali—ancient ruins on both sides—then past Circus Maximus where chariot races once thundered by (now it’s mostly joggers and dog walkers). Last stops: Orange Garden terrace (the air smelled faintly citrusy) and that quirky Aventine keyhole view of St Peter’s dome framed perfectly at the end of a leafy tunnel.

Somewhere along the way we stopped for coffee—proper Roman espresso—or gelato if you prefer something sweet. Three hours flew by fast; I never felt rushed or unsafe thanks to our driver-guide who seemed to know every shortcut and story in town.
