The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so awkward holding my camera at first. Rome’s busy streets—Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, even just the little alleys—are full of people who seem to know where they’re going. Our guide, Marco, noticed and just grinned. “Everyone feels that way,” he said, adjusting his battered camera strap. He showed me how to slow down and actually look for light bouncing off old stone, not just point and shoot. The air was warm but not sticky, and you could smell coffee drifting out from somewhere close by.

We wandered past the Colosseum (it’s bigger than I imagined), stopping so Marco could show me how to frame arches through my lens. He made a joke about tourists doing the same pose every time—he wasn’t wrong. At the Trevi Fountain, there was this moment where a breeze caught the spray and everything felt kind of electric for a second. I tried to catch it on camera but missed; Marco just shrugged and said sometimes missing is part of it. That helped more than any technical advice.

By the time we reached Piazza Navona, I’d stopped worrying about settings so much. There was an old man sketching near one of the fountains; Marco chatted with him in Italian for a bit while I fiddled with depth of field (I still don’t totally get it). The whole private photography lesson felt more like walking around with a friend who knew all the shortcuts—and who didn’t mind if you took five minutes to figure out your focus ring.
