The Experience

The Porta di San Sebastiano, built around 275 AD as part of the Aurelian Walls, marks where the tour begins—the same gateway that once stood at Rome's southern edge and still carries medieval graffiti left by centuries of pilgrims. From there, the route follows the Via Appia Antica into the Caffarella Park, one of Europe's largest green spaces, where Roman building remains sit among paths and groves rather than on crowded streets.

The e-bikes handle the terrain and let you cover more ground than walking would allow in four hours. You'll pass the Aqueduct Park, where sections of the ancient water network still stand and some channels remain in operation—the engineering visible in preserved arches and the scale of what Rome built to move water across the landscape. The Villa of the Quintilii sits at the fifth mile of the Appian Way, its remains belonging to two consuls from the second century AD. The Circus of Maxentius, the best-preserved Roman circus still standing, shows the spina where the Agonale obelisk once sat before it was moved to Piazza Navona during the Renaissance.

The tour also passes the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, a pagan tomb from the first century BC that was later incorporated into a medieval fortress, and the Baths of Caracalla, which were the largest public baths of their time and still retain most of their structure. A branch of the Aqua Marcia brought water to the baths through the Antoninian aqueduct, and small remains of that system are visible near the Porta di San Sebastiano where the day began.
