The Experience

A minivan picks you up at Circus Maximus and drives you south past the Baths of Caracalla, then stops at the Catacombs of San Callisto or San Sebastiano for a 45-minute guided walk through the underground burial chambers. After that, the shuttle takes you to the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, where you step out, walk three minutes on the original Roman paving, and then mount your e-bike. From there, you're on the Via Appia Antica itself — the oldest road in Rome, and for most of the ride, closed to traffic except residents' cars.

The cycling part is the main event. You pedal through the Appian Way park, passing Roman ruins and tombs that line the route, then swing into the Aqueduct Park where those massive ancient arches rise up around you. The guide rides with the group the whole time, pointing out details and keeping everyone together. About 90 percent of the route is on the ancient Roman pavement, which is uneven and requires basic-to-medium bike handling skills — it's not a smooth path, and the countryside setting means you're away from the city noise but also away from amenities. The shuttle then takes you through Tor Fiscale Park and back to Circus Maximus, a 20-minute drive each way.

Groups stay small, capped at eight people, and the tour won't run if fewer than four sign up. E-bikes come with helmets, and if you're traveling with a child under 20 kilograms, a baby seat is included. Rain ponchos are provided. Children under 12 can ride in the shuttle but not on their own e-bike; kids 12 and up can ride their own. The guide has the final say on whether someone is fit enough to ride safely, and that decision stands with no refund. Pregnant travelers aren't recommended for this one.
