Pedal through 2,000 years on Rome's oldest road, then descend into the catacombs

You cycle Rome's ancient Appian Way on a traffic-free route, visit the Aqueduct Park's massive Roman arches, explore the countryside near Tor Fiscale, and spend 45 minutes in the catacombs with a guide. The e-bike handles the hills, and groups stay under 8 people so the pace stays relaxed. Helmet, rain poncho, and all entry fees are included.

Step-by-step itinerary

Cycle Rome's Appian Way and Catacombs

  • Meet guide and walk to rental point
  • Cycle along Via Appia Antica
  • Cycle through Appia Antica park and ruins
  • Visit Aqueducts Park and view arches
  • Pass Tor Fiscale Park and Roman countryside
  • Tour San Callisto or San Sebastiano Catacombs
  • End e-bike adventure at Rome Termini

The Experience

The bikes are already lined up when you arrive at the rental point near Rome Termini, and your guide is ready to walk you through the basics before you clip in. The route starts on the Via Appia Antica itself — the same stones that carried Roman legions, and now closed to regular traffic except for residents. You'll spend the next few hours cycling on that original Roman paving, the basolato, which is uneven under your tires but somehow makes the whole thing feel real in a way a smooth modern path never could. The e-bike does most of the work, so even if you haven't cycled in years, the pedaling stays manageable.

After the initial stretch along the Appian Way, the route takes you into the Parco degli Acquedotti — the Aqueduct Park — where the massive stone arches rise up around you like a landscape from another era. Your guide will point out how the Romans engineered these things to carry water across miles of countryside, and you'll understand why people still talk about it. Then you pass through Tor Fiscale and the Caffarella Parks, which feel genuinely rural despite being only a few kilometers from the city center. Shepherds still graze animals in these fields, which is the kind of detail that makes the whole day feel less like a tour and more like you've stumbled into a pocket of the Roman countryside that somehow survived.

The catacombs come at the end — either San Callisto or San Sebastiano, depending on what the operator schedules. You'll have about 45 minutes underground with your guide, moving through the narrow passages where early Christians buried their dead. It's cooler down there, quieter, and the guide's voice carries differently in the stone. By the time you emerge and head back to Termini, you've covered roughly 90% of the route on traffic-free ancient paving, seen two major archaeological sites, and done it all without fighting Rome's car traffic or navigating the crowded city center on your own.

What’s included

Your day includes e-bike rental with helmet, rain poncho, entry to the Aqueduct Park, catacombs ticket with 45 minutes of guided exploration underground, and a local guide leading you through the traffic-free sections of the Via Appia Antica and the surrounding parks. Public transportation is available nearby if you need it before or after.
