The experience

The Catacombs of San Domitilla stretch 17 kilometers underground across four levels, holding around 150,000 burials from early Christian Rome. Your guide meets you in the garden above, then takes you down into the constant 16°C cool: a real break from Rome's heat. You'll walk the ancient tunnels where gravediggers (called Fossors) carved burial chambers into soft volcanic rock, and you'll see their own tomb, the Cubiculum, still there. The frescoes you pass are among the oldest Christian art in existence: apostles, biblical scenes, and symbols early Christians used to recognize each other when worship was illegal.

The tour moves through three distinct spaces. First, the semi-underground Basilica of Nereus and Achilleus, built when Christianity itself was forbidden: a place where the faithful gathered in secret. Then the tunnels themselves: you'll see the Aquiferium where bodies were ritually washed before burial, the Refrigerium where families held memorial meals for the dead, and the oldest fresco depicting the Last Supper with Peter and Paul. Your guide reads the ancient tombstones aloud, turning names and dates into the actual lives and deaths of people who lived two thousand years ago. After the catacombs, you have the option to explore the Appian Way and its countryside nearby: a quieter side of Rome most visitors miss.
