The experience

The boat departs from the public pier in Como and heads north along the western shore, passing the Life Electric installation by architect Daniel Libeskind before reaching Villa Olmo, a neoclassical structure that anchors the Como waterfront. From there the route curves through Cernobbio (nicknamed little Paris on Lake Como for its historic villas), and past Villa d'Este, the luxury hotel that hosts an annual elegance competition for historic cars. The boat continues to Moltrasio to show Gianni Versace's former villa, then rounds toward Laglio, where George Clooney's summer residence, Villa Oleandra, sits on the shoreline.

At Comacina Island, the only island on Lake Como, you can swim in the water or stay aboard. The guide will anchor so you have time to cool off. If you want to try wakesurfing or wakeboarding, the boat and equipment are set up for it, and Larry, the guide, leads the session. The crossing then heads east toward Nesso, where the Nesso Ravine drops as a natural waterfall beneath the Civera bridge, a Roman structure that has stood for roughly 2,000 years. On the return to Como, the route passes Il Sereno, one of the world's highest-rated hotels, and the Mandarin Oriental in Blevio before pulling back into the pier where you started.

You choose between a one-hour or two-hour cruise, and whether to book for five or eight passengers. The boat and driver are yours alone. Soda, water and prosecco are aboard.
