The Experience
I’ll admit, I was nervous climbing onto the Pegaso 22 at the Como pier — not because of the water, but because everything felt so quietly grand. Luca, our captain, just grinned and handed me a bottle of water like we’d done this a hundred times. The engine barely made a sound as we pulled away from the Lario bar; all I could hear was the slap of little waves against the hull and some distant church bells. There’s something about seeing Villa del Balbianello from the lake that makes it feel almost unreal — like you’re peeking into someone else’s movie set.
Luca kept pointing out places with these quick stories — Versace’s old villa with its octagonal church (he said you can rent it for weddings, but €15,000 an hour? I nearly choked on my Prosecco). He told us how George Clooney sometimes waves to boats from his garden in Laglio, but today there were only gardeners trimming hedges. We passed Moltrasio and Carate Urio so fast I almost missed them, then slowed near Isola Comacina where the air smelled faintly of woodsmoke and lakewater. At one point he let us swim off the Lecco branch — cold enough to make me gasp, but honestly worth it just for that shock awake.
Bellagio itself was busy but somehow peaceful too. We drifted past Villa Melzi’s gardens where Napoleon supposedly stayed (Luca winked when he said it — who knows if it’s true). Walking up to the square felt like stepping into a postcard: laundry flapping above shop doors, kids eating gelato on the steps. On the way back toward Como we hugged the shore past Nesso’s Roman bridge and this wild tangle of green cliffs. The sun came out just enough to make everything shimmer for a minute or two — I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic at home.
We finished with another splash of Prosecco as Luca steered us back to the pier. He joked about teaching us how to fish next time (I think he meant it). If you’re looking for a Lake Como cruise that feels both relaxed and kind of cinematic — well, this is probably it. Not perfect weather or perfect hair day for me, but honestly? Didn’t matter at all.
