Summary

Lake Como boat ride with villa views swimming and local stories

You’ll board a small group boat in Como for a two-hour ride across Lake Como’s first basin — passing storybook villages, stopping to swim under Nesso’s waterfall, sipping wine or prosecco as your captain shares villa secrets. Expect laughter between strangers and moments where the lake feels entirely yours.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I thought I’d seen Lake Como before — you know, from the shore, or those glossy postcards. But actually being out there on the water in that little Karnic boat? Totally different. We met at this pier in Como (the Sant’Agostino one, not hard to find but my phone still tried to send me somewhere else). There were seven of us plus Captain Marco — who immediately made a joke about how Italians never swim before June unless they’re “crazy tourists.” He grinned at me when I dipped my hand in anyway. The lake was chilly but not as cold as I’d expected.

The boat was new and smelled faintly of sun-warmed vinyl and sunscreen. As we cruised past Cernobbio and Moltrasio, Marco pointed out these insane villas — Villa d’Este looked like something out of a movie (probably is). He had stories about each place; apparently George Clooney’s house is somewhere near Laglio but he just shrugged and said “He’s never home.” We sipped prosecco (included, thankfully) while passing Blevio, and I swear the light on the water made everything look softer. Someone played music from their phone — Italian pop, nothing fancy — and it just fit.

We stopped near Nesso for a swim. The waterfall there is louder than you’d think — not roaring, but steady enough that you hear it before you see it. I jumped in after some hesitation (cold shock! but worth it), and floated for a minute staring up at all that green. The others laughed when I tried to climb back into the boat less-than-gracefully. No one cared though; everyone was just relaxed by then. Marco poured more wine and told us how the villas look totally different from the water side — he’s right. You can’t get this view from land, no matter how many photos you take.

After two hours, we looped back toward Como with wet hair and that kind of tiredness you only get from sun and wind. I kept thinking about how quiet it felt out there compared to town — even with music playing and people chatting softly in three languages at once. It wasn’t what I expected at all, honestly. I still think about that moment floating near Nesso, hearing nothing but water and someone laughing behind me.
