The experience

The ALFASTREET 25 is a cabin cruiser built for small groups, maximum six people, so the boat stays nimble and the captain can linger at viewpoints without the constraints of a larger vessel. You board at Sant'Agostino pier in Como's center and head out onto the water with a guide who speaks English or Italian and knows the villas by their history: which cardinal built Villa d'Este in 1568, how Gianni Versace transformed Villa Le Fontanelle in the 1970s, why Villa Pizzo's terraced gardens descend in layers to the shore. The tour covers two hours, moving along the eastern and central lake to reach sites that have no road access. You see them as their original owners did, from the water looking back at the land.

Swimming and photography breaks are built into the route. The Nesso waterfalls, among Lake Como's most famous, offer a place to stop, take pictures and swim if you choose. You pass through Laglio, the village made known by George Clooney's Villa Oleandra, and move past Villa Cademartori, Villa Pasta and the Mandarin Oriental resort in Blevio. The captain points out details (the 30-meter fountain at Villa Geno, the neoclassical symmetry of each façade, the rare plants in the gardens), and you have time to absorb the scale and setting of each one. A bottle of white wine or prosecco, water, sunscreen and music are included. The boat carries insurance and the captain handles all navigation.

Fuel costs €100, paid in cash at the end of the tour. The boat is yours alone: no hop-on, hop-off or shared departures. Public transportation reaches the pier if you're staying elsewhere in Como or the lake region without a car.
