Shape clay and glaze your own tile in three hours

A private ceramic workshop in Vietri Sul Mare where you learn majolica production techniques over three hours, working with clay modeling, the potter's wheel, glazing and hand decoration. The workshop runs in English or Italian with a live guide. Children are welcome from age 10. You'll make small clay pieces, experiment with traditional methods, and take home a decorated tile.

The experience

What does it take to make Vietri's famous majolica? This workshop answers that question by putting you through the actual steps. You start with clay modeling, usually small animals first, then move into the Colombino technique, a coil-building method that opens up what's possible with your hands. After that comes the wheel: you'll try throwing to feel how the clay responds to pressure and speed.

The glazing comes next. You'll immerse a piece you've made in glaze the way the workshops do it, watching how the coating transforms raw clay into something finished. Then decoration: you choose the style (geometric, fantasy or naturalistic), and apply it to a tile. The guide walks you through each step, showing you how the tradition actually works instead of just talking about it. Work shirts and tools are provided, along with water, coffee and tea.

The workshop takes three hours total. A live guide leads the session in English or Italian, and the space welcomes children from age 10 onward. You leave with the tile you decorated and a working knowledge of how Vietri ceramics come together.
