The experience

I’ll admit it: I almost bailed on the whole day trip to Pompeii from Naples. The sky looked moody and I’d barely finished my coffee when our driver, Carlo, pulled up grinning like he’d seen this all before. “Don’t worry about the clouds,” he said. “Vesuvius likes drama.” He wasn’t wrong. I wandered off for a bit just to stand at that Terrace of Infinity where marble busts stare out over nothing but sky and water. Didn’t say much there. Sometimes you don’t need to. On the way back I realized I hadn’t checked my phone in hours, which might be the best part of all.
