The experience

The tour starts at Porta Marina Superiore and moves through the archaeological site on foot, stopping at the Great Theatre and the smaller Odeon, then down Via dell'Abbondanza: the main street where shops, a fast-food counter and a laundry still stand. Your guide is Eliana Sandretti, an archaeologist, or one of her team who have worked in Pompeii for years. That background changes what you're standing in front of: not just the Stabian Baths or the Forum, but the reasoning behind how the city was laid out, why certain buildings sat where they did, and what the frescoes and mosaics were actually meant to say.

The route includes the Gladiators' Barracks, the Temple of Jupiter, the Court of Justice, the Lupanar (the brothel), and the Temple of Venus. You'll see the Cave Canem mosaic, the meat and fish market, the wool market, and houses with their original frescoes and mosaics still visible on the walls. The itinerary ends at Porta Marina Inferiore. The whole walk takes three hours, which is enough time to move through the major structures without rushing but also without lingering on every detail: your guide paces it so the day holds together.

Skip-the-line access is available on request if you book in advance. You'll receive a link to purchase entrance tickets beforehand. The tour is private, so it's just you and your group with the guide. English and Italian are both available. Children under 18 get free entrance. Adults pay 19 euros per person at the gate. Strollers are fine for infants, and the site is suitable for all fitness levels, though you'll be on your feet for the full three hours on uneven ancient stone.
