The Experience
I never thought I’d stand in the middle of Pompeii’s old forum, squinting at Vesuvius behind broken columns while our guide—Francesco, who actually worked here as an archaeologist—told us about daily life before everything froze in ash. We’d barely walked through the entrance (no waiting, thankfully), and already I was trying to picture the noise and color of this place. The air smelled faintly dusty, but there were wildflowers poking up between stones. Someone’s phone beeped and it felt weirdly out of place.
Francesco led us down Via dell’Abbondanza, pointing out faded shop signs and what he called “ancient fast food”—I guess some things never change. He had this way of pausing mid-sentence to let us imagine things for ourselves. In the Stabian Baths, my shoes squeaked on old tiles and he showed us frescoes that still looked bright after all these centuries. There was a moment in the Lupanar (the brothel) when everyone got awkwardly quiet—then someone giggled and Francesco just grinned, like he’d seen it a hundred times. Honestly, I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a tour about a disaster.
The casts of the victims hit me harder than I thought they would. It’s strange seeing something so human left behind by lava. Later we wandered through the Great Theatre and I tried to imagine applause echoing off those stone seats (harder than you’d think with birds chirping overhead). My feet hurt by then but I didn’t really care; every corner felt like another story waiting to be told. The whole thing lasted about two hours but it could’ve been half or double that—I lost track.
What’s included
Your day includes fast-entry tickets to Pompeii’s archaeological site (no waiting at the gate), guidance from a real archaeologist throughout all main attractions like theatres and baths—even those awkward corners like the Lupanar—and assistance for your small group of up to 10 people from start to finish.
