Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius: Archaeologist-Led Ruins & Crater Hike
Ancient Pompeii and a Volcano That Still Smokes
You spend the morning walking Pompeii's main sites — Forum, houses, baths, the brothel — with an archaeologist explaining what you're seeing. After lunch, you hike Mount Vesuvius to the crater rim, where the view of the Bay of Naples and the volcano's interior makes the steep final stretch worth it. Transport and both entry fees are included, and the group stays small enough that you're not lost in a crowd.

The Experience
"The ash came so fast they didn't have time to run," our archaeologist said, standing in the Forum where the ground was still uneven under our feet. That's the thing about Pompeii — you're not just walking through old stones. You're walking through the last day of 79 AD, and the guide knows exactly where to stop so you see it. We started at Porta Marina Superiore, the main entrance, and moved through the Forum first, the heart of the city where markets and politics happened. Then Via dell'Abbondanza, the main street, where you can still see the ruts from carts. The House of Menander was the richest — mosaics, frescoes, the kind of place that made you understand what "wealthy" meant two thousand years ago. The Stabian Baths were vast, the oldest thermal complex in the city, and the Lupanar, the famous brothel, was smaller than you'd expect but somehow more real because of it.
After the archaeologist's two hours at the ruins, a hiking guide met us and we loaded into the minibus for Mount Vesuvius. The drive takes you up through the landscape the volcano made, and when you arrive at the entrance, the first thirty minutes is steep — really steep — up to the crater. Closed-in shoes are essential; the path is loose volcanic rock and doesn't forgive. But then you're at the top, looking down into the crater that still smokes slightly, and the view opens up: the Bay of Naples, Capri, Ischia, the Sorrento coast all laid out below. The last 500 meters are the hardest part, but that's also why the view hits the way it does.
The whole day runs as a small group — up to 14 people in the minibus, up to 20 at Pompeii with the archaeologist — so it doesn't feel like you're shuffling through a crowd. Transport, both entry fees, the archaeologist's knowledge, the hiking guide: it's all arranged. You're back at Porta Marina Superiore by the end of the afternoon.
What’s included
Your day includes entry to both Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, a 2-hour guided tour of Pompeii's main sites (Forum, Via dell'Abbondanza, House of Menander, Stabian Baths, Lupanar, House of Faun, and both theaters) led by an archaeologist, minibus transport from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius and back, and a licensed hiking guide for the crater hike. Small group size keeps the experience intimate at both sites.
Operated by Askos Tours
Is this one for you?Right for travelers who want both Pompeii's archaeology and Vesuvius's crater in one day without arranging separate transport or guides. The steep final 500 meters to the crater and the full-day pace mean you need moderate fitness and closed-in hiking shoes, but that's what makes reaching the rim and the Bay of Naples view possible.
