The experience

The tour starts at Herculaneum's ticket office, reachable by train from Corso Resina station (10 minutes' walk) or by car via Via Pignalver, where unguarded parking sits close by. Your archaeologist guide meets you there and walks you through the smaller, more intact of the two cities. Herculaneum's preservation is what sets it apart: wooden partition walls, doorframes and even the charred remains of wooden beams survive the ash, letting you see how Roman houses actually stood. You'll see the House of the Black Hall with its monumental entrance still holding carbonised doorposts and lintel, the House of Neptune with its elegant wooden partition, and the Central Thermae, built around the start of the 1st century and divided into separate men's and women's baths.

The ancient beach at Herculaneum is where the eruption's violence becomes concrete: over 300 skeletons were uncovered there, people caught by the pyroclastic surge. Your guide walks you through the remains of houses that belonged to the city's leading benefactors and public figures, explaining the inscriptions and the layout that tells you who lived where and why. After a break, you take the train to Pompeii and meet your guide again at the Porta Marina Superiore entrance.

Pompeii's scale is different: the Forum sits at the heart, surrounded by the buildings that held the city's social and political life. You walk the Via dell'Abbondanza, the main street, see the Stabian Baths (the oldest thermal complex in the city), the House of Faun and the House of Menander, both among Pompeii's largest and richest private residences. The plaster casts in the granary show victims frozen in the moment of eruption, along with a dog and a tree. The Lupanar, Pompeii's most famous brothel, rounds out the picture of daily Roman life.
