The experience

Pompeii is the larger and more famous excavation, with the Forum at its center, the House of the Vettii showing intact frescoes and luxury details, the Amphitheater dating to 70 BC where gladiator fights took place, and the Stabian Baths revealing how Romans bathed in hot and cold pools. The Lupanar, an ancient brothel with erotic frescoes, and the two theaters (Teatro Grande for drama, Teatro Piccolo for music) round out the daily life the ruins tell. Herculaneum, buried by a faster pyroclastic flow rather than ash, preserved wood, furniture and frescoes that Pompeii's ash alone could not. The House of Neptune and Amphitrite stands out for its mosaics and shell-decorated nymphaeum; the House of the Deer holds sculptures and a garden; the Central Baths and the College of the Augustales show frescoes and the infrastructure of Roman leisure and worship.

The driver speaks English and provides live commentary during the drive, but does not accompany you into the sites. You move through each at your own pace. The tour runs eight hours total, with roughly two hours set aside for the winery if you choose to add it. That stop covers how local Campania vineyards are cultivated, includes wine tastings paired with regional food, and lets you see the volcanic soil that makes the region's wines distinctive. All tolls, parking and fuel are covered. You handle your own entrance fees at the archaeological sites and arrange your ticket time in advance with the office.

Pickup and drop-off happen at your Amalfi hotel or a designated meeting point. The vehicle is air-conditioned and seats groups of varying sizes. The operator confirms your return time to ensure you make any evening plans, and operates in all weather. Bring layers or rain gear if the forecast suggests it.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Italian.

What's the difference between Pompeii and Herculaneum, and why visit both?

Pompeii was buried under ash and pumice, preserving the city's layout and public spaces like the Forum and Amphitheater in broad strokes. Herculaneum was sealed by a superheated mud flow that carbonized and preserved smaller details (wood beams, furniture, frescoes), so you see how Romans actually lived inside their homes. Both sites are excavations you walk through. Herculaneum is less crowded and often feels more intimate.

Do I need a guide to walk around Pompeii and Herculaneum, or can I explore on my own?

You explore both sites on your own. The driver provides commentary during the journey but does not escort you through the excavations. You can move at your own pace, spend longer at sites that interest you, and skip areas if you prefer. A printed map or a downloaded app helps you navigate the ruins.

What happens at the winery, and how long does it take?

The winery visit lasts about two hours and includes a walk through the vineyards to see how they're cultivated in volcanic soil, tastings of local wines, and food pairings with typical Campania products. It's optional. You can skip it if you want more time at the archaeological sites or prefer not to drink.

What do I need to bring to enter Pompeii and Herculaneum?

You must bring your ID card or passport. It's required for entry to both sites. Wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat, as both excavations are largely open-air with limited shade. The operator recommends casual dress and appropriate layers for the weather.

Are entrance fees included in the tour price?

No. Entrance fees to Pompeii and Herculaneum are not included and you pay them separately at the sites. You should coordinate your arrival time with the tour operator's office in advance so tickets are ready or you know the entry hours.
