Five Villages, One Day: The Train & Boat Route Through Cinque Terre

You travel by coach from Milan to Cinque Terre, explore Manarola on foot, take a train to Monterosso, then board a 90-minute boat cruise past all five villages to La Spezia before returning to Milan. Lunch and some activities cost extra, but transport, the guide, and both the train and boat are included. The day works because the boat leg lets you see the villages from the water — the view that makes Cinque Terre worth the trip.

The Experience

A coach pulls out of Milan early in the morning, heading toward the coast. Two hours in, there's a rest stop to stretch, and then the landscape starts to change — the flat Lombardy plains give way to the first glimpses of the Ligurian coast. By the time you reach Manarola, the first of Cinque Terre's five UNESCO-listed villages, you're standing in front of pastel-colored houses stacked against cliffs, with the sea directly below. This is where the day opens up. You get free time to walk the harbor, watch people jump from the rocks into the water, or follow one of the trails that lead into the Cinque Terre National Park if you want to hike a section of the famous paths.

From Manarola, a short train ride takes you to Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five villages and your boarding point for the boat. The 90-minute cruise from Monterosso to La Spezia is the centerpiece — you're on the water looking back at the terraced vineyards and the cliffside villages, and you'll also pass Portovenere, another dramatic coastal town. The boat moves slowly enough that you can actually see the detail: the stone terraces, the way the houses seem to grow out of the rock, the small beaches tucked between the cliffs. It's the kind of view you can't get from land, and it's the reason this trip works the way it does.

Lunch is on your own — there are restaurants and cafés in the villages, though they're not cheap and they fill up fast during the day. After the boat arrives at La Spezia, you board the coach again for the return to Milan, with another rest stop along the way. The whole day is roughly 12 to 13 hours from pickup to drop-off, which sounds long until you realize you've covered five villages, a train, a boat, and some of the most photographed coastline in Italy without having to rent a car or figure out the regional train schedule yourself. A professional guide travels with the group, and the coach is air-conditioned — both things that matter on a day like this.
