The Experience

You want to see the real Tuscany — the one that isn't packed into a coach with thirty other people — but you're staying in Florence and don't have a car. That's the whole reason this tour exists. The ride starts in Fiesole, just 20 minutes by bus from Florence's center, and from there you're on premium e-bikes heading out into countryside that most visitors never reach. The group stays at four people maximum, which means your guide can actually talk to you instead of herding, and the route shifts day-to-day based on how you're feeling and what the weather allows.

The e-bikes handle 30 to 40 kilometers across terrain that includes Etruscan roads from 200 BC — the same paths Leonardo da Vinci walked when he lived in Fiesole, the same ones Dante traveled. You'll climb toward the Sanctuary of Monte Senario, a monastery still inhabited by monks at 800 meters, or swing through Settignano to see Michelangelo's childhood home, depending on what your guide decides that morning. The views from Fiesole itself are the reason Florentines have been escaping there for centuries: the whole city spreads below you with its terracotta roofs and the Arno valley beyond, and almost nobody is standing there taking selfies because they're all down in the crowds at Piazzale Michelangelo.

Halfway through, you stop at a family farm to pick fresh bread, cheese, seasonal vegetables and fruit straight from the land. Then you ride to their estate — they produce extra virgin olive oil and wine — and you help prepare a traditional meal together using what you've gathered. The wine is theirs, the oil is theirs, and you eat sitting down with your guide and the other three people on the tour, not rushed, not on a schedule. Everything is included: the bikes, the helmet, the food, the wine, the guide who actually knows this place because they grew up here.

You need to be comfortable on a bike and reasonably fit — this isn't a casual pedal, and some of the downhill sections get steep — but the e-motor does the heavy lifting on climbs. Wear proper cycling clothes, not sandals, and check the weather before you go. The bus back to Florence runs every 15 minutes until after midnight, costs €1.70, and takes less than 20 minutes from the Fiesole stop.
