The Experience

You're standing at Piazzale Montelungo at 8 AM, your guide in blue already waiting. The bus pulls out at 8:15, and within twenty minutes the city noise fades. Rolling hills take over — vineyards striped across slopes, olive groves catching the light, the kind of Tuscan countryside that doesn't need a filter. This is the Chianti Classico region, and the Chianti wine tour moves through it on the Via Chiantigiana, the old road that cuts straight through the heart of it all.

The first winery sits on a hilltop. You walk up through the vines — it's a short slope, but your guide points out the soil, the exposure, why these grapes taste the way they do. Inside the cellar, cool and quiet, you taste three or four different organic wines, each one paired with an explanation about how it was made, what the territory gave it. The second winery follows the same rhythm: vineyard, cellar, tasting. By the time you've finished, you've moved through two small-scale producers and tasted enough to know the difference between one Chianti and another. The wine-expert guide does the talking; you do the tasting. And yes, you can buy bottles to take home — balsamic vinegar and olive oil too, if you want them.

The bus gets you back to Piazzale Montelungo around 1:15 PM, depending on traffic. The whole thing runs five hours or so, which means you're done before lunch gets serious. Air-conditioned vehicle, licensed guide, transport from Florence included — nothing else to arrange. Wear comfortable shoes because the vineyard walks are real, not paved. Bring your ID. And if you need vegetarian or gluten-free options, the wineries can handle that, though they'll tell you cross-contamination isn't impossible.
