The experience

You arrive at a Cesarine host's home in Cefalù: part of Italy's largest network of home cooks who open their kitchens to travelers. The host walks you through the cooking of one dish, finishing it in front of you so you see the technique and timing. Then you move to the table for a four-course meal: a seasonal starter, one of three house pastas (spaghetti alla carrettiera, pasta alla Norma, or pasta with sardines), a second course of fried mussels or sardines prepared the Sicilian way, and a choice of cannoli, cassata, almond pastries, tiramisu or a similar dessert. Water, a selection of red and white wines from regional producers, and coffee come with the meal.

The whole evening lasts about two and a half hours. You're eating in a private home, not a restaurant, so the pace and the conversation follow the host's rhythm. Public transportation is available nearby if you need it. Choose lunch or dinner at checkout depending on when you want to eat.
