The boats are Aaron Marine 277 and 278, the iconic wooden vessels built in Como and synonymous with the lake's way of life. A driver and local guide run each tour, narrating the villas and sites as you pass them. The standard two-hour route leaves and returns to Como, running up the east shore and down the west, with George Clooney's Villa Oleandra as the anchor point. The itinerary names over twenty estates (Villa Carlotta, the Versace villa, the House of Gucci, the Star Wars villa), and smaller towns like Torno, Cernobbio and Bellagio, each one explained as you approach.

You set the length: one hour covers the core Como-to-Oleandra run; two and a half hours adds the Nesso waterfalls and the Civera Bridge; three hours and beyond reach Comacina Isle, Varenna and the gardens of Bellagio. The operator is happy to adjust the route, start time and drop-off point if you ask. Fresh home-made focaccia, cold soft drinks, Prosecco and Italian wine come aboard.
