The Experience

The first thing that happened was Paolo, our driver, waving us over to the open-top van like we were old friends. He actually remembered my name from the booking—small thing, but it set the tone. The air in Chianti that morning smelled like wet earth and rosemary, which I didn’t expect in June. We bumped along winding roads with poppies everywhere, passing cyclists who waved back. At the first winery, I tried to swirl my glass like I knew what I was doing; the owner just grinned and poured more. Their olive oil was so grassy and sharp it almost made me cough (in a good way). I ended up dipping bread into everything.

Montefioralle came next—tiny stone alleys barely wide enough for two people. There was an old man fixing shutters who nodded as we passed.
