Step-by-step itinerary
Barolo wine tour and scenic drive
- Depart from Alba
- Panoramic drive around Barolo area
- Explore Barolo or nearby town
The experience
The route winds through eleven municipalities across the Langhe hills, each one entitled to produce Barolo wine from Nebbiolo grapes. You'll see vineyard-covered slopes dotted with medieval towers, castles and small hamlets. The landscape itself is part of why the wine tastes the way it does. The drive is the education: different exposures, different soils, different aspects of the same hillside all change what ends up in the bottle.
At the boutique winery, the owner or winemaker takes you into the aging room and pours 4-5 wines, walking you through how Nebbiolo from different parts of the region evolves over time. You're tasting the same grape from different terroirs, which is the whole point of Barolo. The place matters more than anything else. The tasting is built around comparison, not just consumption.
After the winery, you have time to walk through Barolo itself or another medieval town in the region: La Morra or Serralunga d'Alba, depending on the winery's location. Wine shops line the streets, and the pace is slow enough that you can actually absorb it instead of rushing through. The four hours includes the drive, the tasting and the town, so there's no scrambling.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Italian.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How does the tour work if I'm driving my own car?
If you choose the option without transport included, the guide meets you at the winery and leads the tasting and town walk from there. You drive yourself to the meeting point, which saves the cost of the driver but means you're navigating to the winery on your own.
What exactly happens inside the aging room at the winery?
The owner or winemaker takes you through the cellar where Barolo ages in barrels, then pours 4-5 wines for tasting. Each one shows how the same Nebbiolo grape develops differently depending on which hillside it came from and how long it's been aging.
Can I book this if I'm staying in a town outside Alba or Barolo?
Hotel pickup is included for Alba, Barolo, La Morra, Monforte and surrounding areas. If you're staying elsewhere in the region, you can use your own car and meet the guide at the winery instead.
Is lunch included, or do I need to arrange that separately?
Lunch is not part of this tour. The four hours covers the drive, the winery tasting and the town walk. You can eat in one of the wine towns afterward if you want to extend the day.
What's the difference between Barolo from different hillsides?
The tasting compares Nebbiolo grown on different slopes and exposures within the Barolo region. A north-facing vineyard produces different tannins and acidity than a south-facing one, even though it's the same grape and the same small area. That's what the winemaker walks you through.
