The Experience
What makes this different from a restaurant tasting is where it happens: you taste the five SAIO Assisi wines in the winery itself, then walk out into the vineyard that produced them. The tasting room is where you learn the story of the family farm and choose which wine you want to bring to your picnic—you get a bottle for two people, paired with handmade food. After that, you follow a map through the vineyards on a self-guided route marked with information boards about wine and vine growing. The walk is easy and flat, the kind anyone can do, and it takes you to the highest point in the vineyard where the view opens up: Assisi and the Saint Francis Basilica sit just 800 meters away, with Santa Maria degli Angeli and Perugia visible in the distance.
At the picnic spot, everything is already set up for you. You have your chosen SAIO wine and a spread of handmade food: bread with SAIO extra virgin olive oil, local cheese and cured meats, torta al testo (a salty flatbread made by hand), and dessert. Bottled water is included. You eat surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and oaks, with no sound but nature and no schedule pushing you—you stay as long as you want. The walk back gives you time to take final photos before you leave.
