The experience
The tour starts at the Pagus Wine Tours store in Verona, where you meet your English-speaking sommelier and board the minivan for the drive into Valpolicella. The landscape shifts as you climb into the hills: terraced vineyards stacked on slopes, stone villages, the rhythm of the seasons visible in the vines. Two wineries anchor the morning, each one a chance to taste their entire range: at least four wines per stop, paired with local bread, cheese and salami. The cellars stay at a constant 15 degrees Celsius, so bring a sweater.
At each winery, the sommelier walks you through what you're tasting: how the appassimento method works (grapes dried on straw mats before pressing), why Ripasso tastes different from Amarone, what the DOC and DOCG designations mean. You're not watching a demonstration. You're tasting the wines themselves and learning to recognize the differences. The tour respects the schedule: if you have a train to catch or an opera ticket at the Arena, let them know when you book so they can keep the timing tight.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 17 years); Infant (under 6): free.
What's the difference between Amarone and Ripasso?
Amarone uses grapes dried on straw mats for months before fermentation, concentrating the sugars and creating a fuller, richer wine. Ripasso takes leftover skins from Amarone production and ferments them with fresh Valpolicella wine, producing something between the two in body and flavor.
How many wines do we actually taste on this tour?
At least four wines at each of the two wineries, so a minimum of eight tastings across the morning. Each winery pours their own selection from their DOC and DOCG range, so the exact wines vary by location and season.
Is the tour suitable if I have mobility issues?
Some of the old cellars have stairs, so let the operator know about any limited mobility when you book. They'll work with you to find wineries and routes that fit your needs.
What should I wear for a morning in the vineyards?
Comfortable shoes or sneakers if you'll be walking the vineyard slopes. The cellars are cool at 15 degrees Celsius, so bring a sweater or jacket even if it's warm outside. The operator will show you the vineyards if weather and timing allow.
Can I buy the wines I taste?
Yes. The Pagus Wine Tours store in Verona stocks wines from the regions you visit, sold at cellar price. You can also buy directly at the wineries during your tastings.
