Step-by-step itinerary
Half day Soave and Amarone wine tour
- Welcome guests at Verona store
- Visit Medieval town of Soave
- Taste Soave wines at first winery
- Travel to Valpolicella wine region
- Taste Valpolicella wines at second winery
The experience
The tour starts at the Pagus Wine Tours store in Verona, where you can browse wines from both regions at cellar prices before heading out. From there, a minivan takes you first along the Soave wine route through hills dotted with vineyards, stopping at the medieval town of Soave itself: one of the last walled hamlets in Northern Italy, ringed by ancient walls and dominated by its castle. This is where you'll spend time at the first winery, tasting at least four different Soave wines: the crisp DOC, the more complex Superiore DOCG, the sweet Recioto di Soave DOCG, and a sparkling version that shows how varied this single region can be.
After Soave, the minivan carries you into Valpolicella, the land of Amarone. At the second winery, you taste another four wines: starting with the everyday Valpolicella and moving through Ripasso (aged in Amarone barrels for extra depth) to Amarone itself, the region's most celebrated red, plus a Recioto, the sweet counterpart. The sommelier walks you through the differences in style and aging between each one, explaining what makes these wines distinct. Snacks are provided throughout, and the air-conditioned minivan means you're comfortable between stops.
The entire experience runs around four and a half hours. The cellar stays at a constant 15 degrees Celsius, so bring a sweater or jacket. If the winery can show you the vineyards, wear comfortable shoes. If you have a train to catch, a show at the Arena, or a dinner reservation later, let the tour operator know when you book so they can keep the schedule tight.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 17 years); Infant (under 6): free.
What's the difference between Soave and Amarone, and will I taste both on this tour?
Soave is a white wine from the hills around the medieval town of Soave, ranging from crisp and dry to sweet. Amarone is a full-bodied red from Valpolicella made from partially dried grapes. This tour includes tastings of both: at least four Soave wines (DOC, Superiore DOCG, Recioto di Soave DOCG, and sparkling) at the first winery, and four Valpolicella wines (Valpolicella, Ripasso, Amarone, and Recioto) at the second.
Is the medieval town of Soave included, or is it just a drive-through?
The medieval town of Soave is part of the route. You'll see it surrounded by its ancient walls and dominated by the castle, one of the last walled hamlets in Northern Italy. The tour shows you the town and the history of the Soave wine region before you visit the winery.
What if I have mobility issues or can't handle stairs?
Some old cellars have stairs, so let the operator know when you book if you have limited mobility. They'll do their best to accommodate you or adjust the tour accordingly. The cellars stay cool at 15 degrees Celsius, and comfortable shoes are recommended if you visit the vineyards.
Can I buy wines at cellar prices after the tour?
Yes. The tour starts at the Pagus Wine Tours store in Verona, where you can buy wines from both Soave and Valpolicella at cellar prices, the same prices the wineries offer, along with local products of the region.
