The experience
The bus leaves Tel Aviv and crosses into Jordan, with border control and customs taking up to an hour. Once at Petra, you choose whether to walk or ride horseback through the Siq (a smooth gorge carved into the rock), to reach the Treasury, the site's most recognizable structure. From there, the day unfolds through the Obelisk Tomb, the ancient Theater, and a colonnaded street lined with decorated shrines. You'll stay overnight in a hotel next to the archaeological park, with lunch at an authentic local restaurant on the first day.
The second day is yours to spend as you wish. Most visitors head to the Petra Monastery, also called Al Dayr, perched on a nearby hill with views across the site. The Great Temple's grand columns, the Byzantine Church, Qasr Al Bint Temple, and the Urn Tomb are all within reach. The Bedouin Market sells handmade souvenirs, and many people end the day at the Petra Museum to learn how Nabataean culture shaped these structures over centuries. You return to Eilat and then to your drop-off point in Tel Aviv.
A qualified guide leads the tour in English (Spanish available for additional cost). The bus is air-conditioned and spacious for the long drive. You'll need a valid passport and should bring $65–$125 in cash for Jordanian border fees, depending on your visa status. Wear comfortable walking shoes and pack layers. The desert is warm by day and cool at night. Breakfast on the first day is not included, though there's a stop on the way south. Lunch is provided.
