The experience

The tour starts early: your flight leaves Tel Aviv at 6:40 am, and after landing you take a shuttle to the main bus station where the company representative meets you around 8:15 am for the drive to the Jordanian border. Once you cross into Jordan and reach Petra, you walk through the Siq (the narrow canyon carved into the rock), for your first view of the Treasury rising from the cliff face. From there the guide takes you through the site to see the Tombs and the Amphitheater. Petra holds over 800 structures still standing. The walk takes about 3.5 hours. You'll eat lunch at a local restaurant around 3 pm, then transfer to your hotel in Petra for the night.

Day two is yours to use as you want. Many visitors return to explore the Monastery, which sits higher in the mountains and requires a longer hike than the main sites. You can wander at your own pace, revisit favorite spots, or rest at the hotel. At 4 pm the driver picks you up to take you back to Aqaba for your return flight to Tel Aviv. An optional evening show (Petra by Night, with theatrical lighting on the Treasury) is available for an extra cost on day one if you want to see the site after dark.

You'll need a valid passport and should be in moderate physical condition. The walking on day one covers uneven terrain and involves some climbing. Vegetarian meals can be arranged if you request them when booking. Note that border fees (65 dollars per person) and a Jordan visa (75 dollars per person) are not included in the tour price and are payable separately.

Top questions

What exactly is the Siq at Petra?

The Siq is a narrow canyon carved through rose-red sandstone that leads into the heart of Petra. You walk through it on day one as your entrance to the site, and the Treasury appears at the far end as you emerge from the passage.

Can I visit the Monastery on this tour?

The Monastery is not part of the guided itinerary on day one, but day two is free, so you can hike to it if you want. It sits higher in Petra and takes longer to reach than the Treasury and Tombs, so plan extra time if you decide to go.

What time does the tour end on day two?

The driver picks you up at 4 pm on day two to return you to Aqaba for your flight back to Tel Aviv. You have the morning and early afternoon to explore Petra on your own before the pickup.

Do I need to arrange my own transport from Tel Aviv airport?

No. After you land, you take shuttle number 30 from the airport exit to the main bus station (about 30–35 minutes, around 5 NIS per person), and the company representative meets you there at 8:15 am to drive you to the border and then to Petra.

Is there an evening activity option in Petra?

Yes. Petra by Night is an optional theatrical lighting show on the Treasury, available twice a week for an extra cost. It happens on day one after dinner if you want to see the site illuminated at night.
