The Experience
You know that feeling when you’re not sure if you’re part of the show or just watching? That’s how it started for us in Ubud’s Lost City. The air was thick with incense and something smoky from the BBQ grills. We had to pick a side—Lemurian or Atlantian—which felt silly at first but then kind of thrilling. Our guide, Putu, grinned and said, “Choose with your heart or your head.” I went Lemurian. My friend went techy Atlantian (of course). The dancers pulled us right in—literally, one of them handed me a flower and whispered something about gratitude. I still have no idea what she said, honestly.
The whole thing moved fast—one minute we were watching this wedding dance that shimmered under lantern light, the next there were Atlanteans storming in with these wild metallic masks. It was loud and messy and the crowd actually gasped when the fire dancers spun out of nowhere. I caught myself holding my breath during the Flame of Humanity bit—there was real heat on my face from those torches. Arthur Carmazzi narrated parts in this booming voice; he made it sound like we were all supposed to learn something big about courage or ego. Maybe I did, maybe not—but it stuck with me.
Dinner was…unexpected. You go up and pick what you want—vegan, vegetarian, halal, whatever—and they grill it right there. Someone behind me asked if “ancient civilization” meant spicy; the chef just laughed and handed him a chili anyway. The food had this earthy taste—roots and herbs I couldn’t name—and everyone seemed to loosen up after eating together at these long tables. By the end, people who’d never met before were talking like old friends about which Guardian they’d be brave enough to face (I said Love; someone else joked Ego would be too easy). Walking out into the night air felt strange—I kept hearing drumbeats even after we left.
