The Experience

The day starts early in Ubud, and by the time most visitors are ordering coffee at a café, you're already walking through a village garden with a local resident, picking vegetables that will become your lunch. The cooking class isn't something you sit and watch — you're the one holding the knife, learning how to slice galangal and pound spice paste the way people have done it here for generations. Your guide moves through the kitchen like they're showing you their own home, which, in a way, they are.

Before the cooking starts, there's the foraging. You walk into the forest around the village and collect ingredients that tourists never see — leaves, roots, things that don't have English names. It feels strange at first, picking food from the ground, but the guide explains what each plant does, and suddenly you're not just gathering; you're learning how a Balinese kitchen sources itself. The village itself is quiet in the morning. You pass houses with open courtyards, see people sweeping, smell incense from small shrines. It's the kind of place that doesn't perform for visitors; it just exists, and you're moving through it as someone who belongs there, at least for the day.

The temple visit comes mid-morning, and this is where the spiritual side of the day settles in. You're not just looking at the architecture or taking photos — you participate in prayers, and your guide explains what's happening and why. There's a moment of quiet that feels different from the rest of the tour, less about collecting experiences and more about understanding what matters to the people who live here. After that, you return to the kitchen to finish the cooking class, and then you eat what you've made, sitting with your guide, tasting the work of your own hands. The day ends with a temple offering workshop, where you craft small decorative offerings from palm leaves and flowers — something you'll see placed around the village every single day, a ritual so woven into life that it's almost invisible until someone shows you how to make one.

Private transport picks you up from your hotel and brings you back, so you don't have to navigate the roads yourself or figure out timing. The whole day runs about eight hours, and everything — entry fees, lunch, water, tea — is already paid for. If you want to add a bicycle ride through the village on another part of the day, you can arrange that too.
