The PADI Open Water Course in Tulamben is a three-day certification class combining online theory, confined water training and open ocean dives to qualify you to dive to 18 meters anywhere in the world. Bali Diving Academy keeps groups small and bases instructors on-site in Tulamben, where the reef current is usually gentle—a setup that works especially well for beginners. Pickup around the Tulamben area is included, and you'll use all scuba equipment provided.

The Experience

What makes this different from a one-off dive is that you're building skills from the ground up. The course runs three days: you'll complete PADI e-learning theory online before you arrive or work through it with your instructor during the course. On day one, you train in confined water—a pool environment where you learn the fundamentals of breathing underwater, managing buoyancy and handling equipment without the variables of the ocean. Days two and three move to open water dives one through four in Bali's reef, where you apply what you've learned and explore the underwater while your certified instructor watches your technique.

Tulamben's dive site suits beginners because the current stays gentle most days and the reef is close to shore. Your instructor lives on location and knows the site intimately—the layout, the inhabitants, where the light hits. Groups stay small so every diver gets the attention required to build confidence. The PADI certification you earn is recognized worldwide, which means once you finish these three days, you can dive to 18 meters on any future trip without repeating the course.

Pickup and drop-off around the Tulamben area are arranged for you, and all scuba equipment—tank, wetsuit, regulator, mask, fins—comes with the course. You'll need at least moderate physical fitness, and the course isn't suitable if you have spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns or are pregnant. Lunch isn't included, so plan to eat in town between dives. If you want photos or video of your underwater moments, that's available to purchase separately.
