The experience
You start with pickup from your Makassar hotel or Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, then travel two hours by air-conditioned vehicle through changing landscapes, from city outskirts to green hills, traditional villages and the first dramatic limestone formations of the Maros karst region. The drive itself frames what you're about to see: the scenery shifts gradually from rural to otherworldly.
At Pier 1 in Rammang-Rammang, you board a traditional open boat for a slow passage along the Pute River toward Kampung Laku, a village enclosed by towering limestone cliffs and the Stone Forest: a natural maze of vertical rock formations shaped over thousands of years. From the boat you walk into Kampung Laku and the Labyrinth Cave, a system of narrow passages carved through limestone. After returning to the boat, you continue downriver to Pier 2, where Batu Tianang offers another vantage on the karst formations. The Karst Cafe and Eatery sits here if you want refreshments and local food before moving on.
The second half of the day splits into two walks. From the starting point, a 1.5-kilometer walk through the karst landscape leads to Fireflies Cave. The floor is slippery when wet and some areas have sharp rocks, so your guide will direct you carefully. Then by boat to Pier 3 and Kampung Berua, the main village, where a 2-kilometer walk passes rice fields, the Kingkong Stone (a distinctive limestone formation and photo stop), and Padang Amarrung, an open area where you can rest and drink fresh coconut water while looking out at the surrounding cliffs. The return boat ride to Pier 1 closes the loop, and your driver meets you for the two-hour transfer back to Makassar.
