The experience

The hike starts at 8 AM from Makassar and reaches the Lengkese registration post by midday. From there the trail climbs past Lake Tanralili at 1,454 meters, arriving at the Lembah Lohe camp around 8:30 PM. The pace is steady but the distance and elevation gain mean a full day of walking. You'll have a tent, mattress, sleeping bag and headlamp waiting, plus a hot dinner and morning coffee prepared by the porter.

Day two reverses the climb. You wake before sunrise to watch it break over the valley, then take a short trek to Love Lake (Danau Cinta) and spend time exploring the Lembah Lohe area before heading back down to Makassar by early afternoon. The route passes through a conservation area. Entry permit and parking are included in the price, as is private transportation from your hotel or meeting point in the city.

Bring moderate fitness and a willingness to walk uphill for hours. The trek is not technical but it is long. The operator provides trekking poles, a raincoat and a headlamp, so you travel light. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included at camp and on the trail, along with snacks and hot drinks throughout the day.
