The experience

The Baduy people have lived in the hills and jungles of West Java near Jakarta since the mid-15th century, deliberately isolated from the modern world. This private tour takes you from the city into their territory: you'll drive through plantations and hills, then trek on foot through the village itself, visiting homes and meeting residents who live without sandals, electricity or modern conveniences. A guide travels with you the whole way, and the route covers several kilometers of uneven terrain.

Transport is air-conditioned for the drive out, and lunch is included partway through the day along with bottled water. The tour runs 10 to 12 hours total and covers all fees and taxes. You can book this as a group of up to five people traveling together, or choose the Baduy outer option if you prefer a different part of the tribal area.

What’s included

  • Private transportation with an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive.
  • a live guide who speaks English.
  • lunch and bottled water during the trek.
  • all fees and taxes.
