The experience
You start with a drive south from Jakarta into the countryside, stopping in villages where you'll see rice planting, traditional kitchens and daily community life before arriving at Bogor Botanical Gardens. Built in 1817 across 200 hectares, the gardens hold more than 15,000 tropical plant species and sit beside a presidential palace. After walking the grounds, your guide leads you into the rainforest on a marked trail that crosses rivers and passes through dense vegetation and natural rock formations.
The trek ends at a 40-meter waterfall hidden deep in the forest. The river at its base is clear enough to swim in, and you can wade or float in the water while the falls pour down around you. The walk to the falls takes 45–60 minutes each way and covers 2.5 km. The return follows the same route. Bring a change of clothes and a small towel, and wear sturdy non-slip shoes. You'll cross rivers on foot and the rocks are slippery.
Your guide speaks English and travels with you the whole day in an air-conditioned vehicle. Hotel pickup and drop-off in the Jakarta area are included, along with bottled water and entrance tickets to both the gardens and the national park. The tour runs 8–10 hours total. If you have dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free), the operator can arrange them.
