The Experience

The first thing I remember is the cold—like, really cold—even though it was still pitch black outside when our driver knocked on the hotel door in Malang. Dwi led us up to a spot he called “his lucky corner” for sunrise. When it started—the sky just cracked open with these weird pinks and smoky blues over Mount Bromo and Semeru—I kind of forgot about my freezing toes. Everyone went quiet for a minute. You could smell sulfur faintly when the wind shifted. I tried to take photos but none of them really got it right; maybe it’s one of those things you have to see yourself.
