The route suits beginners—the mountain is 1717 meters high and has erupted 30 times since 1804, most devastatingly in 1926 when lava reached the village below.

The Experience

You'll be picked up from your hotel in the dark, somewhere between 2 and 3 am depending on which area you're staying in—Sanur, South Bali, or Ubud. The drive takes you to the base of Mount Batur in Kintamani, arriving around 3:45 am. Your local guide meets you there and walks through the safety procedures before the trek begins. The climb itself takes roughly three hours for most people, a steady uphill walk on a route built for beginners. You reach the crater rim around 6 am, just as the sun breaks the horizon.

At the summit, the caldera spreads below you—the massive crater formed when part of the mountain's body collapsed during the 1926 eruption. You have time to walk around the crater rim and watch the light fill the valley while you eat the breakfast box included with the trek. By 7:30 am, the descent begins. The walk down takes less time than the climb up, and you're back at the vehicle by 9 am. On the return drive to your hotel, your guide can stop at a Balinese coffee and spice plantation if you want to see how local crops grow.

The whole outing runs about nine hours from pickup to drop-off. You'll need to be ready to move in the predawn dark and comfortable walking uphill for three hours straight, but the route is designed for people new to trekking. Bring layers—it's cool at the summit before sunrise—and wear shoes with grip. The air-conditioned vehicle handles the drive both ways, and bottled water is provided throughout.
