The Experience
I’ll admit I was a little nervous when our driver picked us up in Labuan Bajo just after 7am. Something about heading out to see Komodo dragons by speedboat felt surreal—like I’d signed up for a nature documentary. The harbor was already buzzing with fishermen and guides shouting over the hum of engines. Our guide, Dwi, handed out water bottles and grinned like he knew what we were in for. The air smelled like salt and diesel, which sounds weird but honestly made it feel real.
The ride to Padar Island was fast—wind whipping my hair everywhere—and I kept trying to spot dolphins (no luck). Hiking up Padar’s rocky path took longer than I thought; I had to stop and catch my breath more than once while Dwi pointed out tiny deer tracks in the dust. At the top, the view didn’t look real: three bays curling around each other, sand in different colors. I tried to take a photo but it never quite captured it. My shirt was soaked through from the climb but I didn’t care—everyone just stood there quietly for a minute, even the chatty ones.
Later on Komodo Island, we met a ranger named Agus who carried this long forked stick—he said it’s for “just in case,” which made me laugh nervously. The Komodo dragons were bigger than I expected and moved with this slow confidence that made me step back without thinking. Lunch was a simple box (rice, chicken), eaten under scraggly trees while monkeys watched us hopefully. There was something funny about eating lunch surrounded by prehistoric lizards and bold monkeys fighting over crumbs.
Snorkeling at Pink Beach is still stuck in my head—the sand really does have this blush color when you scoop it up, and the water is so clear you can see your own feet kicking above coral gardens. At Manta Point, Dwi shouted “there!” and suddenly these huge mantas glided right beneath us—so close my heart jumped. We ended at Kanawa Island where the sand felt almost powdery between my toes. By then everyone was sunburned and tired but nobody wanted to leave just yet.
