The experience

The day starts with a pickup from your hotel in Karangasem, Candidasa, Amed or Tulamben, then heads to Tenganan Village, where the Bali Aga people have kept the original Balinese traditions and ceremonies alive for centuries. The village layout and architecture follow an ancient plan, and you'll see where the gamelan selunding music and geringsing double ikat textiles come from: both unique to this place. Your driver stays with you throughout and speaks English, so you can ask about what you're seeing without a script.

From there, the route takes you to Tirta Gangga, the water palace built in 1948 by the Raja of Karangasem. It's a maze of pools and fountains set in a lush garden with stone carvings and statues. The name itself means water from the Ganges, and it holds spiritual significance for Hindu Balinese. The palace sits in the middle of rural countryside, so the setting is as much part of the visit as the architecture. Then comes the drive to Lempuyang Temple, located 1,175 meters up the slope of Mount Lempuyang: the Gate of Heaven sits here, and it's the stop most people come for the photograph, but the temple itself is one of Bali's highest and the views from it reach across the eastern coast.

The final stop is Virgin Beach, also called Pantai Putih, the only white-sand beach on Bali's eastern coast. It's about 20 minutes north of Candi Dasa and stays quieter than the main tourist beaches because it takes effort to reach, which is exactly why it's worth the drive. The water is usually calm, rare corals and tropical fish are visible in the shallows, and dozens of cafes line the sand where you can order lunch or a drink. Your sunbed and umbrella are included, so you can settle in without arranging anything extra.
