The experience
The tour leaves Bandung at 8 a.m. on Day 1 and heads to Ciwidey, stopping at a rice field and a luwak coffee home industry before hiking to Kawah Putih, one of two craters that make up Mount Patuha, an active andesitic stratovolcano. You'll explore the surrounding plantations and walk down to the crater lake itself. After lunch, the route continues to Rancabali Tea Plantation for a short walk through the terraced slopes, then to Renganis crater, where thermal springs have created warm pools and mud baths in the river valley: some heated by volcanic activity, others fed by bamboo pipes. You'll spend the night in Garut, 10 km before Papandayan volcano.
Day 2 starts at 4 a.m. for the drive to Papandayan, one of Java's most active volcanoes. A 30-minute trek takes you to the sunrise point. After a simple breakfast you continue walking to explore the volcano's active features, including a milky blue-green crater lake left by the 2002 eruption. The walk covers several hours and crosses varied volcanic terrain. Later that morning, you drive toward Tasik Malaya, passing terraced rice fields, and stop at Kampung Naga, a traditional Sundanese village where the community maintains strong ancestral customs and lives in architectural and environmental harmony with the landscape. You'll reach Pangandaran beach, one of West Java's most beautiful, by afternoon, with time to settle in before dinner.
Day 3 begins after breakfast at 9 a.m. with a choice of river activities: tubing down Santirah River through caves and waterfalls, or body rafting in the Citumang (Green Valley) river with swimming and jumping in the natural green water surrounded by forest. You then travel by boat up the Cijulang River through Green Canyon, a narrow gorge flanked by rocky cliffs and dense trees, carved over millions of years by river erosion. The canyon contains caves with stalactites and stalagmites. You'll stop to swim and explore. After Green Canyon, the tour visits Batu Karas beach, a well-known surf spot, for lunch and optional swimming or surfing. The final stop is Batu Hiu (Shark Beach) to visit a turtle conservation site before returning to your Pangandaran hotel or dropping you at Banjar train station if you're continuing to Yogyakarta by night train.

What is Kawah Putih and why is it worth the hike on Day 1?
Kawah Putih is one of two craters that make up Mount Patuha, an active andesitic stratovolcano in West Java. The hike takes you down to the crater lake itself, and you'll explore the surrounding plantations and viewpoints before descending to the water's edge: a close-up view of an active volcanic crater that most visitors to Bandung don't reach.
How much walking and physical effort is involved in climbing Papandayan volcano?
Papandayan involves a 30-minute trek to the sunrise point at 4 a.m., followed by a 4–5 hour walk exploring the volcano's active features, craters and the milky blue-green crater lake. The terrain is volcanic and uneven. You'll need moderate fitness and be prepared for an early start and several hours on foot.
What river activities are included on Day 3, and can I choose between them?
Day 3 offers two options: tubing down Santirah River through caves and waterfalls surrounded by forest, or body rafting in the Citumang (Green Valley) river with swimming and jumping in natural green water. You can choose which activity suits you best. Both are followed by a boat trip up Green Canyon to explore the emerald-green river, canyon walls and a waterfall.
Where do I stay overnight, and what's included in the accommodation?
You stay overnight in Garut on Day 1 (10 km before Papandayan volcano) and in Pangandaran on Day 2. Accommodation is included in the tour price. Dinner is free on both nights, though lunch and drinks during the day are not included and are your own cost.
