Step-by-step itinerary

Bali sunrise and salak plantation tour

  • Watch Bali sunrise from jeep
  • Enjoy tea or coffee with breakfast
  • Drive to salak fruit plantation
  • Learn about salak harvesting
  • Harvest salak fruit yourself
  • Sample local arak wine

The Experience

The jeep picks you up from your hotel in the dark and heads east toward Mount Agung, Bali's largest active volcano. You watch the sunrise from the vehicle with tea or coffee and a continental breakfast box while the sky fills with yellow, orange and red across the horizon. Once the sun clears the ridge, the driver takes the hills down into plantation country.

At the salak plantation—the largest in Bali—you meet the farmers who work it. They show you how the fruit grows and how to harvest it, then hand you the knife and let you try. Salak is the second-most revered fruit on the island after durian, and tasting one you just picked tastes different. You sample arak, the local wine fermented from salak, which the farmers warn will fire you up for the rest of the day. The panoramic views across the valley back toward Mount Agung sit behind everything you do here.

The tour ends at a home in the local community where you drink coffee and eat local snacks. The whole experience—sunrise, plantation work, village trails, the arak and the coffee—takes 5 to 6 hours, and the van brings you back to your hotel when it's done.
