Two hours navigating rapids through Bali's jungle valley

You choose a morning or late-morning departure, and the full outing runs about six hours from pickup to return. A professional English-speaking guide leads small groups (minimum two people, suitable from age seven up) through challenging rapids and past the river's natural scenery. Vegetarian lunch options are available if you request them when booking.

The experience

The driver picks you up at your hotel in Seminyak, Legian, Kuta, Ubud or one of the other included areas at either 8:30am or 10:30am, then heads to the Ayung River in the northern part of Ubud. The river itself is where the activity happens: you'll spend two hours paddling through rapids and calmer stretches, navigating the water with a guide who knows the river's currents and the best line through each section. The riverbanks rise high on both sides, and the landscape opens onto rice fields and the Ayung valley as you move downstream.

Once you finish on the water, you'll have access to shower and changing facilities right at the finish point, then sit down to a buffet lunch of Indonesian food. A welcome drink arrives when you first get there. The whole experience (pickup, the two hours on the river, facilities, lunch and the return drive to your hotel) takes about six hours from start to finish. Safety equipment is professional-grade and included, as is insurance coverage for the activity.

Is this one for you?Choose the 8:30am departure if you want the river in the morning light and your afternoon free afterward. The 10:30am slot works better if you're sleeping in or have plans earlier in the day. The private transfer means you're picked up and dropped at your own hotel rather than waiting at a meeting point, so the six-hour window fits around the rest of your schedule in Ubud.

Top questions

What's the Ayung River like for someone who's never rafted before?

Ayung River has challenging rapids mixed with calmer sections, so you'll paddle actively but the guide leads you through each one and the minimum age is seven, meaning families with kids can go. The river is one of Bali's longest and biggest, so the current and the landscape give you something substantial to move through, not a gentle float.

Do I need to bring my own towel and change of clothes?

Towels are provided, and there's a changing room and toilet facilities at the finish point, so you can shower and change into dry clothes before lunch. Bring casual clothes to wear after you change, and leave valuables at the hotel or in a locker if you have one.

Can I book this if I'm staying in Ubud instead of the beach resorts?

Yes, Ubud is one of the included pickup areas, so the driver will collect you from your hotel there. The Ayung River is in the northern part of Ubud, so you're already close to the starting point.

What time of day does the rafting actually happen?

You choose either the 8:30am or 10:30am pickup, and the two-hour raft follows shortly after. The full outing takes about six hours, so an 8:30am start means you're back at your hotel by early afternoon, and a 10:30am start gets you back by mid-afternoon.

Is lunch included, and can I request vegetarian food?

Lunch is a buffet of Indonesian food and is included in the price. If you need a vegetarian option, let the operator know when you book and they'll prepare it for you.
